Engine Break-in

Lubrication

1.  Use a quality 10W30 conventional oil for break in and continue its use for a minimum of 6,000 miles.  A 10w 30 weight shop brand oil will be fine as this oil will not be in the engine long enough to have it breaking down.

2.  We have supplied with your engine 8ozs. of RED LINE synthetic engine break-in OIL additive to be used with the FIRST crankcase fill on initial start-up thru the first 200 miles. This superior product supplies the Zinc, phosphorous (ZDDP) and anti-wear additives that is an important lubricity component missing from motor oil today, and is needed to protect against early wear for the engine rotating assembly, camshaft & valvetrain.

3.  A full Synthetic oil may be safely used after the first 6,000 miles though we prefer a quality conventional oil combined with the GO15 additive at every other oil change.  Some oil consumption (1/2 to 1 quart) is normal in the first thousand miles or so of the engines life as the piston rings are one of the last components to seat.

4.  We advise customers to renew their oil and filter around 3,000 miles or when it has started to turn brown and clarity is leaving.  The oils capacity at this point is deminishing.

5.  Use a premium grade of fuel free of alcohol.

Start-up & the first 6000 miles

1.  The first 20 minutes of the engine running is the most critical step in the break-in process.  Once engine is started, you will want to bring it immediately up to around 2000 RPM and hold it there for a good 20 minutes.  We suggest having someone help during this process because you are going to be burping the cooling system and managing other loose ends that might be encountered.  If you have to shut down to address any issues, just resume procedure from where you left off.

2.  After the 2000 RPM interval, prepare to take the vehicle out for a drive, never letting the engine sit idle for given periods of time.  Anticipate your route for good traffic flow and avoid sitting at lights or in heavy traffic.  Stop and go routes, and it is OK to get 1/3 into the throttle on takeoff.  A good run of 25 plus miles with a combination of both in town and highway driving (if possible) should give a feel for the installation and mechanical performance of the engine.

3.  Bring vehicle back in and change the oil and filter.  Use only a quality conventional oil like Valvoline, no synthetic.

4.  We normally put another 100-200 miles on a new engine before giving it back to the customer just to make sure all is well.  Upon delivery back to customer, advise them to avoid letting the engine idle outside normal driving conditions and to keep a close eye on engine oil and coolant levels and bring back immediately if a fluid leak should develop, engine service light should come on or other event that does not seem normal.  Any air/fuel metering codes that are not corrected in a timely manner could damage the engine.
